Mikey Moyers-VSGA Junior Boy Golfer of the Year

Virginia Tech freshman golfer Mikey Moyers has been named the 2009 Virginia State Golf Association’s Junior Boy of the Year, as announced at the VSGA’s annual meeting at Washington Golf and Country Club in early December.

Mikey, 18-year old son of Mike and Carol Moyers of Stanardsville, is a long-time golfer at Greene Hills and a 2009 graduate of William Monroe High School.  As a member of the William Monroe team, coached by GH Assistant Pro Ron Morris, Moyers won the Virginia High School League AA individual title in the Fall of 2008 for the second year in a row.  His father is Greene Hill's PGA Professional Mike Moyers.

From the VSGA website:  Moyers collected an unprecedented third VSGA Junior Match Play title in 2009.  With the victory, he became only the second golfer to have his name on a VSGA junior title three times.  In winning the Junior Match Play Championship, Moyers claimed four matches in two days and played a combined 37 holes leading up to the championship final, all while trying to shake off a cold.

Moyers also established the VSGA State Amateur Championship's 36-hole stroke play qualifying scoring record of 12-under 132 at Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk.  Moyers' to-par total was an event-best mark for 3-hole qualifying and he advanced to the second round of match play at the event.  A longtime participant on the squad, Moyers helped the Virginias team to victory at the Virginias-Carolinas Junior Matches for its third-straight win in the series.

Eklund Wins Old Trail Invitational

Weston Eklund, a Greene Hills member and rising sophomore at Radford University, finished 1-under par to win the third annual Old Trail Team Invitational held May 15 – 17 at the course near Crozet. The conditions on Sunday were wet and windy, making the course play longer than usual, but Eklund handily shot a 68 on the par 71 course to take the title. His round of 3-under par was the only score in the red during the three-day tournament.   Birdwood’s Dave Hondula was second at 8 over par, followed by Old Trail’s Ty Grove at 10-over and Farmington’s Philip Mahone at 11-over.

Moyers Wins 28th Annual Greene Hills Invitational Golf Tournament
April 18 - 19, 2009

Mikey Moyers won the Greene Hills Invitational title in a sudden death playoff on Sunday for his second win in the event.  Going into the final round, Moyers was tied for the lead at 68 with Jon Hurst and Nick Little and held a one stroke lead at the turn on Sunday.  Hurst birded three consecutive holes to take a one stroke lead through 13.  Moyers birdied hole 16 to tie and both Hurst and Moyers finished with rounds of 68 to make the match all even.  The playoff started on hole 10, which Moyers birdied to take the win.

The Greene Hills Invitational is a two-day, stroke play tournament and is the opening event for the Jefferson Cup, which awards the Bill Battle Trophy to the best local amateur golfer at the end of the season.

Moyers is a senior at William Monroe High School and has committed to play for Virginia Tech this fall.  He is the son of Mike and Carol Moyers of Stanardsville.  Mike is the club pro at Greene Hills and a familiar name on the golf scene.  Mikey has grown up playing on the par 71 Greene Hills course.
